"Zonkeys Are Pretty Much My Favorite Animal"

Hello All,

For this week's post, answer two questions:

1. What does evolutionary biologist Michael Arnold mean when he describes species as being "rocks" or "more liquid than solid"?

2. If you were to create a hybrid, what would you create and why?

1. Since hybrids are created from two different species (most commonly through natual selection) the hybrids are unable to procreate thus resulting in a final species. Hybrids in a biolgoical sense are identical to a rock because it's the final solution, it can't create another offspring or a new creation.
2. My hybrid would consist of a Komodo Dragon and a Condor (Dragador). The Komodo Dragon is the largest living lizard that could easily eat a human, while a Condor is one of the largest flying animals. I think a hybrid that would have the Komodo's mass and wing spand of a Condor would be the superior hybrid.

1. I think that when he's talking about evolution and he says that species are more like "rocks", he's talking about how they can't be changed. Like a rock or a stone it can't be changed into something else and in a sense it's a result. When he mentions that its "more like a liquid then a solid" he's saying that these species aren't like rocks, and that they are more like a liquid because it can be changed into something else.

2. I would have to say my hybrid would be a dog and a cat ( I'm not sure if they already have these) and I couldn't decide if the name should be so I'll just call it a Dat. I would do this because I am a dog lover, and love that dogs are so loyal and loving, but all cats hate me for whatever reason. But I love the fur and how soft they are.

1. I believe biologist Michael Arnold, when he describes species "rocks," means these species stay where there at and how they are unless tampered with. Much like rocks, rocks only changed their location or appearance if modified by man.
b.When Arnold describes species as "more solid than liquid," i believe he is saying, species can change and adapt to their surroundings. Much like liquids take the shape of the solid container they are put in.

2. If i could create a hybrid, it would be a mate in between Mustang and chetta. Because both of these animals are fast, but one is strong. If combined they can make a large, fast, stronger animal, which, i would name Cheetang GT.

1. Species as rocks means they cannot be change easily. They are resilient. However, he believes they are more liquid than solid because the hybrids show that species can branch off and change.

2. I personally like the Zorse so I really don't feel inclined to fantasize about making a whole new hybrid. However, I suppose I would mix a Cheetah with a Black Leopard (Black Cheetah) because the Cheetah species does not have enough variety and because of that it will become extinct. Mixing it with a Black Leopard would hopefully give it more variety.

1.When expressing that species were “rocks” Arnold refers to the definition of species provided by ornithologist Ernst Mayr who saw species as “reproductively isolated group[s]” –immune to genetic changes caused by interspecific mating. Subsequently, Arnold refutes Mayr’s concept, claiming that current species are not the result inflexible evolutionary lines. As other modern scientists, Arnold believes that the evolutionary rise of current species relates to genetic variations introduced by the existence and reproduction of ancestral hybrids.

2.I think that experimenting with coyotes and gray wolves in an attempt to create a hybrid resembling the red wolf would be interesting considering that the latter species is critically endangered.

1. When biologist Michael Arnold describes species as being like "rocks" he is referring to hybrids that cant reproduce. When he mentions they are "more liquid than solid" hes is saying he doesn't believe in species being like rocks or not being able to change since there are so many different animals that can be used to mate in order create new reproductions.

2.If I could create a hybrid it would have to be a pebra (a combination of a zebra with a pony) because ponies are docile animals.I love ponies, and I think this hybrid would be very interesting.

1. When Arnold says the species is a "Rock" i think he means that they will be unchanged unless tampered with. Although when he says he sees that species are more Liquids than solids he's saying that they will take a form that fits what they need.

2. Id probably make a Ponkey a cross between a monkey and a panda, a panda because of the distinct fur and a monkey because they are fast and agile, and are just cool.

1. I think that when he describes hybrids as being like rocks he is trying to say that since they are rarely created in nature and since they cant reproduce that is how they are like rocks.

2. My hybrid would consist of a mix of a white tiger and a panther which are my two favorite animals.

1. I think that when biologist Michael Arnold describes species as “rocks” he considers them unchangeable. Like rocks, they do not change their shape, color, or characteristics. However, he then contradicts himself and refers to species as “more liquid than solid” and here he means that species can be changed into something different, unlike their original shape, size or color by outside forces.

2. My hybrid would be the offspring of a giraffe and leopard. This offspring would be tall and graceful like the giraffe but would be able to run extremely fast like the leopard. I would call it gicheetah.

1. I believe that when Michael Arnold talks about species "rocks" and "more solid than liquid" he is trying to say that species can me changed into something else so there for they are more like liquid, because liquid can change into anything. But unlike rocks it seems physically imposible to change it.

2. If i could make a hybrid, i think that mine would consist of a pig and a bird....i would name it PIRD!!! Because i have always wanted to see pigs fly!

1. When evolutionary biologist Michael Arnold describes species as being rock he is referring to species that are pure and unchanged. Where as species that are "more liquid than solid" are species that underwent evolutionary changes and/or may have been tampered with to create hybrids between species.
2. I would create a hybrid between a rabbit and a parrot. It would be called either a Rarrot or a Parabbit. This hybrid would be a great idea because rabbits could actually talk for once and get out all their anger they have toward people instead of biting them.

1. What i think Michael is trying to say in his "rock" statment is that animals can mate with different species wether man kind is involed in their mating or by them mating naturally and rocks can be moved or reashaped by man or by nature. Threw out the years a rock has moved or reshaped its self do to nature like tornados, floods etc.
In Michaels "liquid than solid" statment i belive he is trying to say that hybriding is possible with almost every kind of animals.

2.my hybrid will be called (tucock)
a mixture of a tucan and a pecock because they are both colorful and pretty :->

1.I believe that when Michael Arnold talks about how species as rocks he is meaning that they are rarely created in nature and since they cant produce so they look like rocks. They are not able to change shape or color. But the species are still able to branch off.
2. I would have to say that my hybrid would be a sheep and a dog so it would be called a shog. Since you are able to train both to do some amazing things I believe that both mixed together would be a very smart animal. Plus they are both very sweet animals

1. When biologist Michael Arnold describes species as being "rocks" he is referring that rocks can not be changed since they can not reproduce as well. As being said that rocks are "more liquid than solid," means rocks have their own way of their shape and form while in liquid than solid.

2. If I were to create a hybrid it would have to be a Lion and an Alligator and call it an 'Alion.' Since Lion's rawr loud with hair all around their head, and Alligator's having to swim in filthy water with sharp teeth.

1. I believe Arnold is saying that species are like "rock" because they can not be changed into something else unless humans do it for them. When Arnold says that they are "more liquid than solid" he is saying that animals can be experimented with to create something new.

2. My hybrid would be a mix between a great dane (dog) and a horse. It would be cool to see a dog with the size and speed of a horse. I would call this breed of animal a Dane Horse.

1. Biologist Michael Arnold conclusion when stating species as "rocks" is that a species is suppose to only mate with there kind and not have a alternatives as if it where a rock. Then wen he stated "more liquid then solid" he concluded a specie is more like liquid who is flexible and can go a different direction as pleased instead as something solid who can't not do anything with anyone else.
2. My hybrid species of choice would be a whit bunny and a chipmunk. These two animals are known to many others as adorable, shy creatures. I would like to see if combining these two would create an even moe adorable hybrid.

1.I think when Michael Arnold describes species as being "rocks" means that some species don't grow as others, for example animals, which really most species do grow. When he says their are "more liquid than solid" he means that species change in different ways.

2. If I would create a hybrid it would be a horse and an eagle so the horse would have the power to fly with his own power of running, that would make him a flying horse-eagle.

1. I believe what Arnold is saying is that "rock" species cannot be changed or mixed. They will stay the same no matter what. "Liquid" species are able to to mix and breed others becoming hybrids.

2. If I were to create my own hybrid I would mix a White Tiger with a Cheeta. White Tigers are my favorite animal. I think the result would be a beautiful massive creature with amazing speed.

1. When Arnold describes species as being "rocks" he means they are very difficult to change, and when he decsribes them as being "more liquid than solid" he means they are more flexable for change.

2. If I was to create a hybrid I would creat a Black Cheeer which is a black bear and cheetah. I think it would create an elusive powerful beast with amazing speed.

I think he just meant that hybrids are like a rock because rocks don't reproduce and rocks are not mixable. When he spoke about the chimps and the humans. It would be extremely unethical to mix, therefore being like a rock. The elements in a rock are very similar to another rock and yet they can not be mixed.

As for the "more liquid than solid" part; It could have meant that hybrids are extremely mixable, unlike rock solids.

If I could create a hybrid I would mix a bat with an owl. With the intentions of eliminating the bat species all together. I hate bats. I would call my new creature "bowls". They would keep their night life habits and not bother anyone during the day and they would look more like an owl instead of a creepy flying rat/dog. It's probably a good thing I'm not a hybrid breeder.

1. What Arnold means is that species used to have the same characteristics as rocks; they improved over time, but otherwise stayed the same. However, now that hybrids have been created, they are more liquid than solid. This is because hybrids are more subject to change, like a liquid.
2. I would create a hybrid called a whark; this is a combination of a shark and a whale. Sharks are supposedly mean and scary, and whales have a more gentle appeal. If we combined them together, it would be interesting to see what was created.

1. When evolutionary biologist Michael Arnold means when he describes species as being "rock", I think he states that species can not change. They stay in only one spot and do not change what they are use to doing. These species stay in their comfort zone and are bland, just like rocks. When Arnold means when he describes species as being "more liquid than solid", I think that species are more flexible with their surroundings. These species are able to be put anywhere and be comfortable with their settings, just like liquid.

2. If I were to create a hybrid, I would create a mixture of a chameleon and a cheetah. It would be called a cheeleon. With the speed of a cheetah with the camouflage skin of a chameleon, this would be the best predator out there. Invisible and fast, that would be awesome.

1. When biologist Michael Arnold speaks about species being rocks or more liquid than solid, i believe that he is talking about how these hybrids can no longer recreate an off spring. hybrids are not all the same like rocks they will be change and look different every time they are combined with another animal and maybe even if they are combined with the same animal. they will all be different in more then one way

2.if i were to create a hybrid i would probably mix a white tiger with a bear. to see how strong and powerful it could be.

1.Michael Arnold describes a species as being "rocks" because the only way they could reproduce is by mating with species that were like them. They were isolated to mate with their own kind.
on the other hand, he referred to species as being "more liquid than solid" because hybrids do exist. A hybrid is made of two different species that mate.
2. If I were to make a hybrid it would be a mixture of lion and a leopard. I've heard of the liger but I haven't heard of the lionard. That's what I think it should be named. It would be cool to see a lion with stripes.

1. I think Arnold is saying that even thogh a rock is a hard thing to change, the rock can evolve over time. So these hybrid animals are finding ways to recreate its just a selective process that will take time to become increasingly effective.

2. My hybrid animal i would create would be a chawk a cheetah and a hawk that way it would be fast in the air and on the ground. They also would be be fierce hunters.

1.When he says that they are more like liquid than solid. He is trying to explain that species have the ability to change or mate with other species other than their own. Meanwhile when he states they are like "rocks" he is trying to explain that they can't change much, it will still be a rock no matter what.

2. If i can mix two species it will have to be a panda with a dog(panda dog). The reason is because dogs are a mans best friend and the panda because they are adorable and are vegetarians.

I agree with Heather Walker. Michael Arnold describes the species as being "rocks" because they are sterile. A rock pretty much stays the same forever and never changes that is why hybrids have an end and it's evolution stops at a certain time.
If I were to create a hybrid, I would create a combination of a dog and a cat. I love both of them because they are pretty much the number one pets and I would have a hybrid in my house as my pet :). So I guess the name would be kittydoggy. :)

1. I think Micheal Arnold is saying that species intend to evolve or transform into a new species due to some change, in which most cases is environment and climate changes. Evolution is accountable reason for this, meaning that they will be unchanged unless interpose with another creating new species.

2.My hybrid would have to be a creation of two dangerous animal, a Lion and alligator. It would still be brilliantly fast and superior at ambushing its prey but also in the water.

1. When Arnold talks about the species being like "rocks" he is referring to the belief that hybrids could not reproduce and therefore were a final species, stuck as they were, not changing with time. When Arnold speaks about the species more liquid than solid, he is referring to the fact that some hybrids can reproduce, therefore being able to change the form of the species.

2. My hybrid species would be a cockatoo and a pug, maybe called a pugatoo.

1. Biologist Micheal Arnold decribed species as being "more liquid than solid," because he thinks that hybrids "help" genes flow in unexpected directions even though the product of the hybrid cannot itself reproduce.
2. If I were to create a hybrid, it would be a cross between a rattlepoodle (rattle snake & a poodle), because ...well...it just sounds cool!

1. The evolutionary biologist Michael Arnold, describes species such as a lion and a tiger reproducing into a liger, which her refers to as "more liquid than solid." But as for the liger ever producing, it is not possible. Therefore the hybrid, which is the liger, is a "rock" for they cannot produce.

2. If i were to create a hybrid, it would be between a panther and a tiger, because are fierce predators, and their abilities as one would be unstoppable. My hybrid would be referred as a Piger.

1. When Arnold states that species are seen as "rocks", he tries to bring the point across that species are to stay the way they are since thats what is thought. Stressing the idea that they were not meant to alter. He later states that they are "more like liquid than solid" since they are able to mix.
2.My hybrid would be that of a sea turtle and of a shark. A sea turtle because they are the cutest sea creature and a shark because they are good predators under water.I would call it a "shartle".

1. When he says that species are more like "rocks" or "more liquid than solid," I think he means that these species might change over a long period of time by evolution itself. Species evolved by mutation of some sort like rock transform from igneous rock to sedimentary rock by weathering process.

1. The author mentions that some scientists think of hybrids as "rocks." By this he is referring to the fact that most hybrids are sterile, which means that they cannot reproduce themselves, just like rocks. Other scientists, however, think that hybrids are more "liquid than solid" by which they mean that hybrids have more qualities than most assume. Just like liquids take the shape of the container they are in, hybrids can adapt to the changes in this world, like any other species.

2. If I could have a hybrid, it would be an iguana and a chameleon, because iguanas are very colorful and chameleons can change color, so I would be very interested in the traits of their hybrid.

1. Reading through the text, Arnold talks about how species can be discribed like "rocks," but more like "liquid than solid" meaning, species are not like rocks beacause of they cannot reproduce, while liquid is more of a blendding tecture. There are many different animals and every single one can mate to mix and have a unquie outcome.

2.My hybrid would consist of a cheetah and a bronco(chebrico). they both have speed and they have a differnt look.

1. What evolutionary biologist, Michael Arnold, is referring term when suggesting that "species were rocks" (4) he makes a claim as to what ornithologist Ernst Mayr commented about his "biological species concept" (4). Mayr uses this concept to explain that species cannot interbreed with other species that they are to stay in the fences of their own. Arnold then explains that this "biological species concept"
(4) is very rigid, solid, like "rocks" in that they are only limited to this archaic idea of mating. He goes to explain that the species mechanism is more complex and grey that does not appear so black and white. "Species are more liquid than solid" (4) suggesting that there are ways of generated out of the fenced idea of mating by Mayr, and that species mating has a more flow that can lead to other options, directions out of the realm of their own isolated family. As Arnold later explains, mating is a "web of life" with the hybrids leading new renovated directions that keep the genes flowing (4).

2. If I were to create an hybrid, it would have been a liger because ever since Napoleon Dynamite, they have just rocked my world. My second option would be a cross between a stallion and a cheeta [sheeta] because one they would look so wicked, but I would also be able to take it to school and wherever I go to save gas and become greener. It would act as a hybrid car, but not be so costly out of my pocket.

1. When biologist Michael Arnold speaks about how species are more like rocks I think he is meaning that the animals can not be changed that the are stuck the way they are and when he states that "they are more like liquid then solid" he really means that these species are accepting change and begging to change them selves.

2. If I was able to make my own hybrid I would have to go with a mix between a tiger and a wolf. The reason for this would be because both of these animals have a great deal of strength. I would call it a" TIOLF" .

1) Biologist Michael Arnold refers to species as being “rocks” because species were not changing, but once hybrids were born the idea of what a species was became open to more interpretation because two different species were able to bread, and the definition of what a species is that they have similar traits and that they can bread, so he then refers to species as being more liquid than solid.
